The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have apprehended a juvenile in Montreal regarding terrorism suspicions. According to a recent press release, the RCMP indicated that the “young man” was allegedly planning an assault on a school within the city. The individual is accused of utilizing artificial intelligence in the potential orchestration of the attack and disseminating threatening messages on the platform Telegram directed at various groups, including Muslims, Haitians, and the 2SLGBTQ+ communities, as confirmed by RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Érique Gasse.
Sgt. Gasse mentioned, “It’s tips we received from the FBI a couple of weeks ago indicating that this individual was planning an attack.” The arrest took place at the individual’s residence on Friday morning as part of an investigation conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, which focuses on tracking and disrupting criminal activities of terrorist entities or individuals posing threats to Canada’s national security.
The operation aimed to disrupt the suspected activities of the individual, as mentioned in the news release, and to secure a peace bond for monitoring and de-escalation interventions. Sgt. Gasse stated that the individual is currently being interviewed by investigators while other investigators are searching his residence for electronic devices or any relevant items pertaining to the investigation. The individual is scheduled to appear in youth court on Saturday morning, with the possibility of facing charges at a later stage.
