Keir Starmer is set to embark on a journey to the Middle East on Wednesday to engage with Gulf allies and deliberate on diplomatic initiatives aimed at backing a two-week ceasefire agreement.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction at the recent development where Donald Trump called off potential strikes on civilian infrastructure in a certain country. The U.S. President agreed to a temporary ceasefire of two weeks on the condition that shipping can resume through the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, the Prime Minister stated, “I am pleased with the ceasefire deal reached overnight, offering a moment of respite for the region and the global community. It is imperative that we, along with our partners, rally our efforts to uphold and sustain this ceasefire, transform it into a lasting accord, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.”

Prior to the ceasefire deadline set for 1 am GMT on Wednesday, Mr. Trump postponed his threat of targeting power plants and bridges in Iran. The President had earlier issued a dire warning stating that unless Tehran met his demands, a civilization would face extinction.

However, Mr. Trump later acknowledged a 10-point proposal from Tehran as a feasible basis for negotiation, following a mediation request from Pakistan. This move came after Pakistan intervened as a mediator in the conflict between the opposing factions.

During his upcoming trip to the region, Mr. Starmer will affirm his government’s dedication to de-escalation and engage in discussions about permanently reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He will explore practical strategies to reinstate freedom of navigation in the crucial shipping lane, building on the positive developments following the ceasefire, as mentioned by No10.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with UK and local personnel during his visit to express gratitude for their courageous efforts in safeguarding our people, interests, and those of our allies, as stated by Downing Street.

The Ministry of Defence has verified that UK personnel have thwarted over 110 drone attacks in the region, with the RAF conducting more than 1600 hours of defensive operations.

Policing minister Sarah Jones mentioned that the Prime Minister is heading to the Gulf today to personally witness the defensive actions in the region and contribute to securing a lasting agreement out of the ceasefire.

Mr. Starmer’s visit follows a gathering of over 40 nations last week, initiated by the UK, to kickstart discussions on a feasible plan to reopen the vital shipping route. Additionally, a separate military planning session was hosted by the UK on Tuesday.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper engaged in a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday evening post Mr. Trump’s alarming statement. The discussion revolved around international collaborations and diplomatic strategies to restore operations in the Strait of Hormuz, including the UK-led meeting that brought together more than 40 countries to pursue the reopening agenda.

Ms. Cooper is believed to have advocated for a swift resolution to the conflict and reiterated the UK’s support for negotiations and actions to avert further escalations.

The effective blockage of the Strait by Tehran, a crucial sea passage from the Persian Gulf responsible for about 20% of global oil transport daily, has led to a surge in global oil prices.
