MP Karl Turner, known for his criticism of the Government, has had the Labour whip removed by Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds. Turner was suspended following multiple warnings for inappropriate behavior towards fellow Labour MPs and intimidating conduct in the Commons. Despite assertions that he was not formally notified before the news broke, Turner expressed surprise at the suspension.
Turner, who represents Kingston upon Hull East, has been vocal against the Government’s proposal to eliminate jury trials for certain offenses. Additionally, he has been increasingly critical of Keir Starmer and Downing Street. His recent comments on the alleged theft of former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney’s phone, containing messages from Peter Mandelson, sparked controversy. Turner later clarified his stance, stating that McSweeney had reported the incident to the police and dismissing any conspiracy theories.
In various instances, Turner has openly criticized government officials and party decisions. Following Labour’s recent by-election defeat, he blamed the Prime Minister for obstructing Andy Burnham from running as the party’s candidate, asserting that Burnham was the best choice for the position. Turner, a former shadow solicitor general, linked his opposition to the jury trial reforms to a past incident where he was wrongly accused of handling stolen goods.
In response to his suspension, Turner emphasized the importance of jury trials in upholding democracy and justice. He expressed willingness to engage constructively with the Party, the Prime Minister, and the Government to address issues in the justice system. Turner’s commitment to the Labour Party remains steadfast, alongside his determination to advocate for what he believes is right. The decision to suspend him is subject to review in the future.
