Community members in Riverhead, Newfoundland and Labrador, are elated following a significant contribution made by a local businessman, who is a former resident, to the volunteer fire department.
Trent Comerford, the owner of T&K Services, expressed his pride in giving back to his hometown, stating that witnessing the joy on people’s faces was immensely fulfilling. His donation of 20 new bunker suits, valued at $100,000, to the Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department was warmly received by the community.
The donation ceremony, held on Thursday evening, was attended by residents who gathered to express their appreciation. Former Chief Don Boyles highlighted the importance of the donation, emphasizing that the department’s previous suits were no longer suitable for use.
Firefighter Earle Kielly praised the new suits, noting their improved comfort and lighter weight compared to the old gear, which has uplifted the morale of the firefighting team.
Sheila Lee, a Riverhead resident and Comerford’s former kindergarten teacher, commended his generosity, describing him as someone always willing to help others. She expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that it was a relief to know that the fire department now had updated protective equipment to safeguard the community.
The recent wildfires in neighboring communities last summer served as a catalyst for Comerford’s philanthropic gesture, as he recognized the crucial role played by volunteer firefighters in preserving community safety. He urged other businesses in the province to support rural volunteer fire departments, emphasizing that even small contributions could make a significant difference in strengthening and uniting the province.
Comerford’s act of generosity underscores the vital role of volunteer firefighters in ensuring the well-being of local communities, with Lee emphasizing the pivotal importance of the fire department in safeguarding Riverhead.
