Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to the Canadian prairie, was discovered meandering slowly at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, leaving many puzzled. Nature interpreter Gillian Malchuk and her team rescued the 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving reports of sightings, initially thinking it was a different species. However, a sighting on the iNaturalist app confirmed the unusual visitor’s identity.
Upon receiving a tip about a tortoise in the parking lot, Malchuk and her colleague found Molly among the reeds, a surprising sight due to her large size. The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh cared for Molly, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals, until her owners were located through a social media post. Molly was joyfully reunited with her family, who had raised her for 15 years, after escaping their yard during renovations.
Despite the happy reunion, the mystery remains as to how Molly journeyed 20 kilometers to the marsh. Speculations suggest a well-meaning individual may have relocated her, unaware of the risks to a tortoise in a wetland environment. The possibility that Molly ventured on her own remains a fascinating enigma.
