“Major Delays on M1 Motorway After Serious Collision”

Date:

Motorists are facing significant delays on the motorway this morning due to a closure of all four lanes on a section of the road, disrupting bank holiday traffic. The M1 has experienced major disruption between junctions J11 and J10 on Friday morning, April 3, following a road traffic collision, according to Traffic England.

Emergency services have responded to the incident, with ambulance personnel describing it as a “serious collision.” Although all lanes for the M1 south between J11 and J10 at Luton have been reopened after an earlier collision, delays of 10 minutes are currently being reported compared to expected traffic flow.

National Highways’ traffic alerts system indicates delays of 50 minutes against anticipated traffic levels. The situation is expected to improve between 10:15 am and 10:30 am as two out of four lanes are now open.

A two-vehicle crash involving a car and a motorbike occurred on the M1 Southbound after J11 A505, as reported by traffic information provider Inrix. Three lanes are currently closed, with only one lane open as police and ambulance services are on-site.

National Highways has stated that traffic is moving through one lane out of four for the M1 south between J11 and J10 at Luton following an earlier collision, with delays of 45 minutes from J11a. The road closure between junctions 10 and 11 was reported at approximately 07:45 am.

Drivers have been cautioned about 30-minute delays, and diversions are in place, redirecting motorists from the M1 to the A505 onto the A5 through Dunstable. The East England Ambulance Service has also arrived at the scene.

National Highways has labeled the incident as a “serious collision,” with significant delays approaching from J11a. With all four lanes closed on the M1 between junctions J11 and J10 due to a road traffic collision, the disruption is particularly affecting travelers heading to Luton Airport, given its proximity to the incident site.

Forecasted challenging road conditions for today were already anticipated, with millions of motorists expected to embark on the busiest Easter getaway since 2022. The RAC, a motoring services company, predicted that this Bank Holiday Easter weekend could be one of the busiest in years, with an estimated 20.3 million vehicles anticipated on the roads on Easter Saturday.
