An individual, identified as the suspect in a violent assault on a synagogue, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. A photo of the suspect revealed what appeared to be explosives attached to his body.
The incident unfolded this morning following reports of a car striking pedestrians and individuals being stabbed. Authorities have confirmed the deaths of two individuals, with three others sustaining serious injuries. Footage from the scene captured a man seemingly wearing a ‘bomb belt’ and subsequently being confronted by two armed police officers.
As the suspect attempted to rise, he was shot by the officers. The video also showed another person, reportedly a stabbing victim from the Manchester attack earlier in the day.
Greater Manchester Police dispatched a bomb disposal unit to the scene. While the suspect is believed to have been killed by police gunfire at 9:38 am, confirmation is pending due to safety concerns surrounding suspicious items on his body.
The police invoked a national codeword, “Plato,” indicating a response to a potential terror attack. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the deployment of additional police resources to safeguard synagogues nationwide in light of the incident, coinciding with Yom Kippur, a significant period for the Jewish community.
A police statement confirmed the fatalities resulting from the incident outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall. The suspected perpetrator was shot by officers and is also presumed deceased. The presence of suspicious items on the suspect’s body has delayed the official confirmation of his death. A bomb disposal unit is currently on-site, with three other individuals in critical condition.
