Miyu Yamashita had a triumphant debut in Canada, securing victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. The 25-year-old Japanese golfer claimed her fourth LPGA Tour win and second of the year with an impressive performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Shooting a 4-under-par 66 in the final round, Yamashita finished the $2.75-million US tournament at 23 under, winning by a significant nine strokes over her compatriot Yuri Yoshida, who finished at 14 under.
Expressing her joy at the win, Yamashita mentioned the support she received from the fans and her enjoyment throughout the tournament. This victory marked her fastest achievement of four LPGA wins by a Japanese player, with her four-day score of 257 in Edmonton equalling the all-time lowest on the LPGA Tour.
Anna Huang from Vancouver stood out as the top Canadian, finishing tied for fourth at 12 under after posting a 5-under 65. Meanwhile, Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng tied for seventh at 11 under, also claiming the title of low amateur for the second consecutive year. Two-time winner Brooke Henderson ended in a tie for 13th at 7 under, acknowledging the strong presence of Canadian players on the leaderboard and expressing optimism for the future of Canadian golf.
Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes have secured their entry into the upcoming LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Reflecting on her performance, Huang emphasized the importance of simplicity in golf and the joy of hitting fairways and greens.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda finished the tournament at 1 under, while Henderson, despite her 14 tour wins, struggled with the rough and missed crucial birdie putts to challenge the leaders. Henderson remained positive about her ball striking and looked forward to the next tournament in Boston to improve her putting performance.
In other results, Michelle Xing from Ontario finished at 3 under, while amateurs Savannah Grewal and Clairey Lin ended at 3 over and Maude-Aimee Leblanc at 4 over. The next CPKC Women’s Open in 2027 is set to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Quebec.
