The Montreal Victoire’s Professional Women’s Hockey League championship trophy, the Walter Cup, is currently missing, according to league officials. The PWHL stated that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination as scheduled and is working with the shipping company to locate it.
The trophy was meant to be sent to Lethbridge, Alberta, to be with Victoire forward Dara Greig. However, upon arrival, the container did not contain the Walter Cup, prompting Greig to postpone her scheduled events with the trophy. Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not have a designated individual to accompany the trophy during its travels.
The missing Walter Cup is a version awarded to championship-winning teams for their possession. The original trophy is permanently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Both versions are crafted from sterling silver by Tiffany & Co., weighing approximately 35 pounds and standing at 24 inches in height and 13 inches in width.
The cup features six W’s representing the league’s original franchises and rests on hockey stick-shaped rods. The base showcases a puck with the names of championship teams inscribed on it. Montreal secured the cup by defeating Ottawa in May, marking the PWHL’s first Canadian team to claim the title, following Minnesota’s two previous championships.
Named after PWHL founder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra, the Walter Cup holds significant value to the league and its championship teams.
