“Nigel Farage Dismisses Housing Chief Over Grenfell Remarks”

Date:

Nigel Farage has dismissed Reform’s housing chief for making insensitive remarks about the Grenfell Tower fire, calling it a “tragedy” but suggesting that “everyone dies in the end.”

Simon Dudley, a former executive at Homes England and the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, faced backlash for his comments on the fire that claimed 72 lives. He criticized building safety regulations introduced after the tragedy, stating that regulations had gone too far in the wrong direction.

Dudley’s statement in Inside Housing magazine, where he remarked, “Sadly, you know, everyone dies in the end. It’s just how you go, right?” angered relatives of the victims who found the remarks callous.

Grenfell United, representing the bereaved families and survivors, condemned Dudley’s remarks as insensitive and dehumanizing. They emphasized that the Grenfell deaths were preventable and not simply a matter of fate.

In response to the controversy, Farage announced that Dudley was no longer a spokesman for the party, citing the inappropriateness of his words. Keir Starmer also criticized Dudley’s comments and called for his dismissal.

Housing charity Shelter’s CEO, Sarah Elliott, labeled Dudley’s comments as shameful, emphasizing that the Grenfell Tower fire was a result of housing injustice and avoidable deaths. She stressed the importance of prioritizing safe and affordable housing solutions.

The Grenfell Inquiry determined that the 72 deaths in the fire were entirely preventable, attributing them to decades of negligence by governments and the construction industry in addressing safety concerns.

The backlash against Dudley’s remarks intensified, with Housing Secretary Steve Reed urging Farage to dismiss him immediately. London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned Dudley’s comments as insensitive and lacking respect for the victims and their community, criticizing Reform’s stance on the issue.
