The Northwest Territories government is including an additional segment of the Mackenzie Valley Highway in the current environmental assessment process. The ongoing assessment by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board focuses on the planned road between Wrigley and Norman Wells. The newly added section involves a corridor linking Norman Wells to the Dempster Highway.
This step is aimed at streamlining efforts, with the government clarifying that it does not diminish environmental review standards or authorize construction. The review process conducted by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board is described as a comprehensive study to determine potential significant adverse environmental impacts or public concerns arising from development.
Following the assessment, the review board will provide recommendations to the territorial government, which could entail allowing the project to proceed with additional mitigation measures under existing regulations or recommending rejection of the project.
Caroline Wawzonek, the minister overseeing strategic infrastructure, energy, and supply chains, emphasized the national significance of the highway project. She expressed the need for readiness to seize opportunities as they arise and highlighted that the decision will facilitate a more cohesive and prompt progression of the project.
The project was referred to the federal government’s Major Projects Office in March. Recent developments saw Ottawa temporarily halting the project until wildfires in the region are brought under control.
