Panic ensued at JFK Airport when an off-duty customs officer allegedly fired shots at a driver, causing chaos among frightened tourists. Port Authority officers are currently investigating the reported road rage incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Gunfire broke out near terminal 8 of the airport at approximately 4:48 am, resulting in damage to a vehicle but fortunately, no injuries were reported. A responding police officer discharged their weapon at the scene.
The off-duty customs officer involved in the shooting was reportedly questioned by authorities. Pictures from the location depicted a significant presence of emergency service vehicles on the Van Wyck Expressway near JFK Airport on Tuesday morning. Traffic cones were utilized to cordon off the area, and numerous police officers were positioned at an intersection on the highway.
The incident caused congestion on the southbound lane, leading to its closure and the redirection of traffic onto local roads. However, one lane was reopened around 7 am. Travelers were advised to utilize the Air Train to JFK and verify their flight statuses before heading to the airport.
