A man in his 60s who was hit by a TransLink bus last month has passed away, confirmed the Surrey Police Service. TransLink spokesperson Jawn Jang acknowledged the incident involving one of their buses on the evening of July 11 in Surrey and directed further inquiries to the Surrey police. At present, no new investigative information is available, as stated by officers.
Previously, authorities had reported that the pedestrian was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries after being found injured at the intersection of 128 Street and 96 Avenue in Surrey. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim receiving medical assistance from paramedics and identified a TransLink bus and driver at the scene.
The Surrey Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit took charge of the case, leading to the temporary closure of parts of the intersection for several hours that night. During the initial investigation, authorities indicated that the cause of the collision remained unknown.
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton informed CBC News that they believed the bus had stopped before the incident occurred. Houghton emphasized that the collision likely transpired at the bus stop, highlighting potential visibility obstructions caused by buses in such scenarios. Notably, speed and impairment are not considered contributing factors to the collision.
This intersection has unfortunately witnessed previous serious accidents this year, including a tragic incident in February where a 22-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a vehicle on 128 Street.
