Police have unveiled photos of two individuals they are seeking to identify following a suspected arson incident at a mosque in East Sussex.
First responders hurried to the religious center in Peacehaven at approximately 9:50 pm on Saturday. Video footage captured two masked individuals in dark attire approaching the front entrance and setting fire to the mosque after spraying accelerant on the door.
Emergency teams from Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service promptly arrived at the scene and successfully extinguished the flames. Although individuals inside the mosque during the attack were unharmed, both the building and a nearby vehicle sustained significant damage, as confirmed by the police.
An investigation is currently underway. Law enforcement authorities noted that one suspect was clad in a distinctive black jacket featuring a white Pre London logo on the chest, while the other wore bright red gloves. Detective Inspector Gavin Patch expressed, “This was a heinous and irresponsible attack that undoubtedly instilled fear in many individuals.”
“We are treating this as an arson intending to endanger lives and are actively pursuing various leads to identify the perpetrators. We are sharing images of the two individuals depicted in the footage, dressed in unique clothing. We believe there are community members who can recognize these individuals,” he added.

Superintendent Rachel Swinney stated, “We acknowledge the impact this incident will have on the Peacehaven and Sussex communities. Enhanced police presence has been established at the site, with additional patrols conducted at various places of worship across Sussex to provide visibility and reassurance. We are committed to engaging with our religious communities to offer support and address their concerns.”

The Home Secretary urged individuals to “stand united” following the “deeply concerning” suspected arson attack. Shabana Mahmood emphasized the ongoing investigation and the potential severity of the situation, thanking emergency services for their swift response.
Mothin Ali, deputy leader of the Green Party, urged authorities to ascertain the motives behind the attack and highlighted the fear and targeting of the community due to their faith.
Chris Ward, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, condemned the “disgusting arson attack” on the mosque and emphasized the need to eradicate violence and hatred from the peaceful local community.
A mosque spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the arson attack, emphasizing that it does not reflect the community’s values of kindness, respect, and support. The mosque will remain closed until the police conclude their investigations, with information being reportable online to Sussex Police or via phone at 101, quoting Operation Spey.
