A stabbing incident and car ramming outside a synagogue in north Manchester have prompted authorities to declare a major incident. The police have confirmed that officers shot and killed a suspect in response to the situation. According to a police spokesperson, the incident unfolded outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall after a member of the public reported a car being driven towards people and a man being stabbed at 9:31 am.
Following the initial reports, firearms officers were dispatched at 9:34 am as additional information came in about a security guard being assaulted with a knife. Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident at 9:37 am and shots were fired by police officers at 9:38 am, resulting in the shooting of a man believed to be the perpetrator. Paramedics arrived on the scene at 9:41 am to treat four individuals who sustained injuries from both the vehicle and stabbing incidents.
The incident occurred during the Yom Kippur Jewish festival, with people gathered for a service outside the Heaton Park Synagogue, as mentioned by Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham. Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the area while law enforcement handles the ongoing situation.
