Quebec officials are expressing shock and anger following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amid reports that the child was denied medical care. Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti is demanding explanations regarding the death of Jusi Padlayat, who passed away on August 3 after his parents sought help for his stomach discomfort at the local clinic multiple times without receiving treatment.
Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, revealed in an interview with La Presse that the family’s pleas were disregarded by medical personnel who simply advised administering Advil or Tylenol to the boy. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and subsequently transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital where he tragically succumbed two days later.
Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering endured by the child as unacceptable and raised concerns of potential neglect, calling for a thorough investigation into any systemic racism within the healthcare system. The Commissioner of Children’s Rights and Welfare has been urged to look into Padlayat’s death, with CBC News seeking comment from the Commissioner’s office.
The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) has also weighed in, advocating for enhanced healthcare services in northern regions, including the implementation of more telemedicine options. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP candidate in Ungava, which encompasses Ivujivik, emphasized the importance of ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all residents.
The tragic incident has prompted Joyce’s Principle Office to underscore the necessity for genuine empathy and actionable support in all services provided to Indigenous communities. The office drew parallels between Padlayat’s death and that of Joyce Echaquan, emphasizing the need to address and rectify any dismissive treatment of concerns from marginalized communities.
Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have committed to conducting internal and external reviews in response to the tragedy. The Quebec coroner’s office has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the Montreal Children’s Hospital declined to comment on specific cases.
