The R&A may adjust their plans for the conclusion of The Open Championship to prevent a potential clash with the World Cup final. Scottie Scheffler is set to defend the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale this summer, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, July 19, coinciding with the football tournament’s grand finale at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The scenario of both events occurring on the same day poses a challenge for Open organizers. Last year, Scheffler began his final round at Royal Portrush at 2:25 pm and concluded his celebratory press conference at 8 pm, coinciding with the kick-off time of this year’s World Cup final.
A playoff at Birkdale, expected to draw a record 300,000 spectators during the championship, could lead to overlapping events and a potential loss of viewership for the R&A, especially if England advances in the competition.
Mark Darbon, the chief executive, acknowledged the issue of competing events on the same date and expressed the organization’s intent to avoid clashes wherever possible. While some factors like playoffs are beyond their control, efforts will be made to prevent scheduling conflicts. Darbon also mentioned the excitement of returning to Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028 after a 16-year hiatus. The last winner at the Lancashire course was Ernie Els in 2012, and Darbon highlighted the enhancements made to elevate the golfing experience at the venue.
He emphasized the challenges of operating at Lytham and the need for thoughtful management to ensure a successful modern Open Championship at the location.
