Hundreds of tourists have flocked to Spain to witness the solar eclipse happening this Wednesday. However, the event coincides with high temperatures and an increased risk of wildfires in the country, causing concerns for authorities aiming to prevent any fire damage. Virginia Barcones, the secretary general for civil protection and emergencies at Spain’s Interior Ministry, emphasized the need to restrict activities that could potentially trigger fires due to the ongoing wildfire season in Spain.
Europe has been experiencing a heat wave since May, with Spain grappling with a severe wildfire season. Over 603,000 acres of land have already been consumed by approximately 400 fires this year, as reported by the European Forest Fire Information System. To mitigate additional fire risks from eclipse tourists, authorities are deploying 35,000 officers to monitor large outdoor gatherings and promptly address any potential fire incidents.
Spain is a prime location for observing the solar eclipse, with the path of totality spanning across various countries including northern Russia, eastern Greenland, and western Iceland, before touching parts of Portugal and northern Spain, ending at the Balearic Islands. Only individuals within the path of totality will witness the full eclipse, while others, including Canadians, will experience a partial eclipse and have been reminded to use proper eye protection.
Authorities have implemented special measures for the solar eclipse, anticipating a surge in visitors. The tourism influx is expected to bring economic benefits to Spain, with an estimated contribution of over 347 million euros. However, concerns persist due to the prevailing dry conditions and heightened fire risks, with AEMET forecasting very high to extreme forest fire index levels on the day of the eclipse.
Despite the heat wave and wildfire threats, enthusiasm for the eclipse remains high among travelers. Professor Jan Cami from Western University highlighted the awe-inspiring nature of the event, where observers witness a temporary drop in temperature and the appearance of stars and planets during the day. Eclipse enthusiasts are undeterred by the challenges posed by the current circumstances, with the anticipation of future celestial events attracting more interest in astrotourism.
