The songwriter of Liam Payne’s song “Live Forever” has shared that the inspiration behind the track stemmed from a fall off a hotel balcony. Preston, the lead singer of The Ordinary Boys, revealed that the song was influenced by his own near-death incident in 2017 when he tumbled from a second-story hotel balcony in Denmark after a night of heavy drinking.
Subsequently, Preston passed on the song to Liam, who released it in 2019, well before the tragic incident involving the One Direction star falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina in 2024. Preston expressed astonishment at how closely Liam’s accident mirrored the backstory of the song.
During a recent interview, Preston described the situation as almost too unbelievable to comprehend. He elaborated, stating, “I gave the song to Liam, and then he falls off a balcony and dies. There are certain events in life that just defy belief.”
Speaking to The Guardian, Preston portrayed Liam as a humorous, kind, and misunderstood individual with remarkable talent. He acknowledged similarities between himself and Liam, both having faced challenges. Despite wishing he could have done more, Preston felt he didn’t play a significant role in Liam’s life to intervene.
Preston hoped the song’s lyrics would serve as a cautionary tale. He expressed, “‘Live Forever’ was my way of saying: ‘Hey, this happened to me.’ But it’s difficult to offer advice when people aren’t receptive to it.”
Preston’s own accident resulted in multiple fractures and a punctured lung, initially raising concerns about his ability to walk again. Following six months in a wheelchair and several surgeries involving metal plates, he eventually recovered.
However, he later battled an addiction to painkillers prescribed after the fall. Describing that period as filled with dread and horror, he overcame the addiction following a challenging withdrawal process.
At the time of his passing, Liam had been in a relationship with Kate Cassidy for two years. Previously engaged to Maya, an influencer-turned-author, they had a tumultuous relationship from 2018 to 2022. Maya later wrote about her experiences with Liam in her novel, “Looking Forward,” and made allegations on TikTok days before his death, claiming he had harassed her from multiple iCloud accounts.
In a shocking 2025 interview, Maya revealed that Liam struggled with identity issues during their relationship but emphasized that she didn’t blame him for his difficulties. She mentioned that Liam’s drug use was a significant factor in their breakup and alleged that he had hurt her in ways she couldn’t fully comprehend.
Maya stated, “I saw the signs, I felt the distance. Ultimately, it wasn’t just the betrayals or addictions that led to our separation—it was realizing that I had spent years in something that wasn’t what I thought it was. I don’t blame him for his struggles.”
