In 1989, Take That’s journey began when a 19-year-old aspiring singer-songwriter, Gary Barlow, sent a demo tape to model agency owner Nigel Martin-Smith. Nigel was impressed by Gary’s strong vocals and mature tracks, leading him to contact Gary promptly.
Despite initial doubts about Gary’s potential as a solo artist, Nigel decided to hold auditions to form a band around Gary instead. This move was inspired by the aim to create a UK equivalent of the successful US boy band New Kids On The Block. Robbie Williams and Mark Owen were among those who auditioned, each bringing their unique talents and personalities to the group.
Robbie’s cheeky wink during his audition secured his place in the band, showcasing his charm. Mark Owen, on the other hand, despite being less experienced, impressed Nigel with his boyish good looks and persona. Howard and Jason also joined the band, each contributing their dancing and musical skills to the mix.
The chemistry between the band members was apparent from the start, with each member fitting into their roles seamlessly. Nigel implemented a rigorous training regimen to polish the boys’ singing and choreography skills, highlighting their shared ambition and dedication.
Take That quickly gained a reputation as one of the hardest-working acts in the industry, performing tirelessly across clubs and schools to build their fan base. Their early struggles to establish themselves in the music scene without the aid of social media or streaming platforms are noted, emphasizing their perseverance and work ethic.
Their journey to success included releasing singles that initially struggled to make an impact on the charts. However, a strategic decision to release a cover of Tavares’ “It Only Takes A Minute” proved pivotal, propelling them to stardom and paving the way for their continued success.
Today, Take That’s legacy endures, thanks to the trust and collaboration between the band members and their manager, Nigel. Their remarkable story of overcoming challenges and evolving as a group continues to inspire fans worldwide.
