Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has made the tough decision to withdraw from the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury. Sinner, who clinched the Wimbledon title recently by defeating Alexander Zverev, has been sidelined since then and had to skip the hard-court tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati to prepare for the U.S. Open.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete in the U.S. Open this year despite extensive efforts from his team and medical staff to aid his recovery. Sinner mentioned that during training sessions in Monte Carlo, it became evident that more time is needed for his right knee issue to heal properly.
Sinner, who won the U.S. Open in 2024 and was the runner-up in last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz, is known for his remarkable performance this year with a record of 44 wins and 3 losses, including six titles. Despite a setback at the French Open, where he experienced a defeat after leading by two sets, Sinner bounced back at Wimbledon to secure his fifth Grand Slam title.
This will be the first Grand Slam tournament that Sinner will miss since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019. Meanwhile, his rival Alcaraz, who has been recovering from a right wrist injury since April, confirmed his participation in the upcoming U.S. Open, setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two dominant figures in men’s tennis.
