A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. The guitarist expressed his disbelief at the passage of time during an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National.” Reflecting on the band’s farewell show, Langlois emphasized his gratitude for the impact their music had on people.
The emotional night in Kingston marked the band’s last concert, with lead singer Gord Downie bidding farewell to a packed venue and a nationwide audience. Fans and Downie shared tears as he sang iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the final time.
Following their formation in 1984, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums and embarked on their final tour in 2016, culminating in the hometown show on August 20. Downie, who had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in December 2015, passed away a little over a year later at the age of 53.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the band’s farewell concert, CBC will rebroadcast the event. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed his appreciation for the ongoing support from fans and emphasized that the event serves as a remembrance rather than a celebration of their career’s conclusion.
Langlois recalled feeling uneasy before the final show but found solace when Downie arrived at the soundcheck with a positive outlook. Baker highlighted his role in supporting Downie’s final wish to connect with every audience member personally during the tour.
Initially concerned about Downie’s health affecting his performances, the band members were surprised by his physical improvement during the tour. Looking back, Langlois admitted they had underestimated the impact of their last show until after the fact.
While confirming that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album, “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, citing a personal experience where music helped him through a moment of grief.
In conclusion, the band members remain grateful for the support and recognition of their music’s enduring impact, as they continue to cherish the memories of their final performance.
