Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House correspondents’ dinner following an attempted intrusion by an accused assailant armed with guns and knives. Shocking scenes unfolded late on Saturday night as the annual gathering commenced normally before gunshots rang out, prompting approximately 2,500 attendees, including journalists and high-ranking US officials, to take cover under tables amid the ensuing chaos.
Donald and Melania Trump were swiftly ushered out of the venue, with the President escaping unharmed. Vice President JD Vance and other prominent politicians present were also quickly relocated to safety. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, was apprehended at the hotel. Preliminary investigations indicate that Allen, whose electronic devices and writings are under scrutiny, allegedly intended to target government figures attending the dinner.
Acting US attorney general Todd Blanche revealed that the suspect had reportedly traveled by train from California and checked into the Washington Hilton hotel. Allen is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
The harrowing incident saw security personnel swiftly respond as guests scrambled for safety. Federal agents and armed Secret Service agents were seen on the scene, and the National Guard was summoned after the assailant opened fire in the hotel lobby. Attendees, including widow Erika Kirk, were visibly distraught as they were evacuated from the premises, with some embracing each other for support.
Cole Tomas Allen, previously honored as teacher of the month at a school in Torrance, California, 18 months ago, now faces legal proceedings following the disruption at the White House correspondents’ dinner.
