Britons have the opportunity to win an incredible £1 billion lottery prize following the announcement of a new draw by National Lottery operator Allwyn. The upcoming draw, set to launch this year, will be linked with America’s renowned Powerball game and will offer a life-changing jackpot of at least £12 million. The jackpot has the potential to reach a staggering £1 billion, making it the largest prize ever offered.
Unlike traditional lottery winnings in the UK, the top Powerball prize must be received over a 30-year period. If a player were to win the £1 billion prize, it would amount to over £30 million annually for three decades. In the unfortunate event that the winner does not live for the entire period, the remaining amount will be paid to their estate, as stated by an Allwyn spokesperson.
However, the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are challenging at 292 million to one, given the competition from 48 US state lotteries. Additionally, the cost of a Powerball line is £4, making it the most expensive National Lottery draw in history. This higher price is attributed to the inclusion of more lower-tier prizes in the UK, where even matching two main numbers can result in a fixed prize of £8, escalating to £1 million for five main numbers.
Although the exact launch date is pending confirmation, UK Powerball players will select five main numbers ranging from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or opt for a Lucky Dip. Tickets can be purchased online or in-store until 11.55 pm the night before the draws, which will occur three times a week.
The introduction of the Powerball game to the UK marks the first time it has expanded outside the US, following the success of the pan-European Euromillions draw in 2004. Allwyn also revealed significant changes to the main Lotto draw, enhancing players’ chances of winning and creating more millionaires annually.
Allwyn’s CEO, Andria Vidler, expressed excitement about the new developments, emphasizing the increased opportunities for players to win substantial prizes. The company aims to provide innovative and entertaining gaming experiences through these new offerings, including the UK-specific version of the iconic Powerball game.
