Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Frigate in Novorossiysk

Date:

A drone reportedly targeted the lead frigate, Admiral Grigorovich, associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking a significant incident. The vessel, known for launching deadly Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukraine, was allegedly struck in Novorossiysk, Russia’s Black Sea port, as confirmed by Kyiv’s drone forces commander, Robert Brovdi.

The strike, believed to be long-range, occurred alongside attacks on other strategic locations in Novorossiysk, such as the oil-exporting port, crucial for Putin’s military funding. Although footage suggests a drone approaching the frigate, the exact impact moment remains unclear.

While there is no independent verification of a direct hit, the mere proximity of a Ukrainian drone to a prominent Russian warship is likely to be perceived as a setback for Putin and his air defense systems. Brovdi mentioned that the ship retaliated with air defense missiles, but the effectiveness of the defense measures is yet to be fully assessed.

In a separate incident, reports indicate that a Russian-controlled floating drilling rig, Sivash, was also targeted by the Ukrainian navy. The operation was attributed to the Birds of the 1st Unmanned Systems Forces Centre, orchestrated by Ukraine’s security service, the SBU.

Furthermore, a Russian drone strike on Odesa, a key Ukrainian port city, resulted in casualties, including the tragic deaths of two women and a two-year-old child. The attack caused substantial damage to an apartment building, requiring rescue efforts to save individuals trapped in the rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that eleven individuals, including a pregnant woman and two infants, were hospitalized following the assault. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to a significant toll on civilian lives, with the United Nations reporting over 15,000 fatalities since the invasion began more than four years ago.

Zelensky highlighted that in the recent week alone, Russia unleashed a barrage of attacks on Ukraine, deploying over 2,800 drones, nearly 1,350 powerful glide bombs, and more than 40 missiles across various locations. The situation remains tense as both countries navigate the escalating hostilities.
