Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again at the U.S. Open. The dynamic duo secured a wild card entry into the tournament, a competition they have triumphed in twice before.
This year marked Serena Williams’ return to tennis after a hiatus of four years. Originally scheduled to compete at Wimbledon alongside her sister, Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during a singles match. Their recent participation at the Cincinnati Open ended with a first-round exit.
The Williams sisters have a strong track record at the U.S. Open, having clinched the doubles title in 1999 and 2009, boasting a commendable 27-7 record across their nine appearances. Their most recent outing in 2022 resulted in an early exit, signaling what was anticipated to be Serena’s final match at Flushing Meadows.
While Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals, Venus, aged 46, is competing in the women’s singles tournament.
Together, the Williams sisters have amassed an impressive collection of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and secured Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
Although Serena chose not to participate in the singles event at the U.S. Open, where she has claimed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she decided to enter the doubles competitions by accepting wild card entries.
Their first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s maiden singles triumph at the tournament. The peak of their partnership occurred about ten years later, with victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another U.S. Open win that same year. Subsequent victories in Australia in 2010 and the French Open solidified their dominance, holding all four major titles simultaneously.
The women’s doubles tournament is set to kick off on September 3, showcasing the formidable duo of Serena and Venus Williams.
