The Winnipeg Sea Bears clinched their first Canadian Elite Basketball League title by defeating the Brampton Honey Badgers 98-84 in the championship game on Saturday. Simon Hildebrandt, a local hero, sealed the victory with a three-pointer in front of a record crowd at the Canada Life Centre. Xavier Moon, a three-time CEBL MVP, led the Sea Bears with 29 points, including a stellar performance from beyond the arc. Moon, in his return season, earned the Finals MVP award for his crucial role in overcoming the absence of the injured star forward Teddy Allen.
Moon expressed his joy at winning in a city that had never experienced a playoff victory before. Jelani Watson-Gayle and Hildebrandt contributed significantly to the Sea Bears’ success, with impressive three-point shooting. On the opposing side, Sean East II led the Honey Badgers with 27 points, while Trentyn Flowers added 20. Despite trailing at halftime and into the final quarter, Brampton fought hard in the game.
Sea Bears’ head coach Mike Raimbault praised the organization for deserving the championship, highlighting the team’s effort and dedication. The CEBL championship format was adjusted to a single-game setup due to court conditions, with the Sea Bears emerging victorious. The Honey Badgers aimed to secure their second title but fell short in the final against the Sea Bears, who had a strong playoff run defeating the Saskatoon Mamba and Vancouver Bandits.
Reflecting on the game, East II acknowledged the team’s resilience and the positive impact they had on the Brampton program. The Sea Bears’ triumph marks a historic achievement for the franchise and the city of Winnipeg.
