A woman allegedly used a hammer to strike a man’s head while he was hospitalized, causing serious injuries. The incident took place in the early hours at a hospital located in Sydney’s inner west area.
Authorities from the NSW Police reported that the assault occurred around 12:15 am on Thursday, April 9, prompting emergency services to respond to the hospital in Camperdown. The victim, a 63-year-old man, was reportedly attacked by a woman known to him who entered the hospital premises.
The man sustained critical injuries from the alleged hammer blow to his head during the assault. Subsequently, a 46-year-old woman was apprehended and charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the victim.
In light of the incident, police investigators are examining a potential link between the assault and a recent family death that triggered a dispute over a will involving the victim. The NSW Police spokesperson stated that the accused woman is set to appear in court after being denied bail following her arrest.
The Sydney Local Health District emphasized the importance of patient and staff safety within their facilities, condemning any form of violence. Following the assault at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where the patient was attacked by a visitor, the district confirmed no other individuals were harmed during the episode.
The matter is under ongoing investigation by the NSW Police, with cooperation from the Sydney Local Health District to support the inquiries. Efforts are being made to provide assistance and counseling to staff members who witnessed the distressing incident.
