A woman experienced severe facial injuries from her own pitbull after suffering a seizure. Karma Davis, 25, lost both lips, a large part of her left cheek, and the bottom of her nose during the incident. Her left ear was also disfigured, while her right ear was partially detached but later reattached.
Karma, who has a history of grand mal seizures, forgot to take her medication that day, likely triggering the seizure. During her latest seizure on March 2, her rescue dog Fayzo severely mauled her while she was unconscious on the kitchen floor.
Upon regaining consciousness, Karma FaceTimed her partner Trenton and discovered the extent of her injuries. Trenton, who was at work an hour away, immediately called an ambulance. Surgeons performed emergency procedures to stop the bleeding and placed Karma in a medically induced coma for two and a half days.
Following multiple surgeries, including reconstructive procedures and a skin graft from her leg, Karma spent about 10 days in the hospital. She now requires ongoing care from plastic surgeons and home health nurses, as she needs a feeding tube and may never eat normally again.
Doctors are exploring options like additional grafts or a full lower-face transplant, which would necessitate lifelong anti-rejection medication. Despite the challenges, Karma remains optimistic and jokes about her situation, grateful for what she can still do.
Although her facial injuries are mostly bearable due to medication, Karma experiences significant pain in her thigh, where the skin graft was taken from. The dog responsible for the attack, Fayzo, was removed by animal control specialists and later euthanised. Karma, who rescued Fayzo from an abusive home four years ago, reflects that the attack was uncharacteristic for the dog.
