Whether connecting to home Wi-Fi or accessing various digital platforms, a significant number of people continue to rely on easily crackable passwords. The habit of reusing the same passwords across multiple accounts further exacerbates the risk of cybercriminals gaining unauthorized access to personal information.
Recent findings from Hybrid Cloud Services reveal that a concerning one in eight individuals use a single password for all their accounts, a risky behavior that compromises security. Additionally, approximately 36% of users employ between one and three passwords for all their online activities.
Only a mere 19% adopt the best practice of using a unique password for each account, which is considered a more secure approach to online protection.
Despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, simplistic passwords such as “admin,” “123456,” and “password” remain distressingly prevalent in the UK. Security experts stress the importance of creating complex, lengthy passwords and utilizing a password manager to securely manage login credentials and deter the temptation of password reuse.
To enhance security measures, experts recommend implementing two-factor authentication whenever feasible to add an extra layer of protection that necessitates a secondary device or verification step for access.
Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasizes the significance of avoiding common or personal details in passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and utilizing password managers to handle password complexity effectively.
To bolster password security, here are three straightforward recommendations:
1. Opt for passphrases over simple passwords by combining unrelated words to create a longer, harder-to-crack passphrase.
2. Generate unique, robust passwords for each account using password managers or tools.
3. Employ a password manager to securely store and autofill login details, facilitating the maintenance of strong, distinct passwords across all accounts.
