Human remains discovered in Umpherville, Manitoba, earlier this week have been confirmed by the RCMP to belong to a newborn infant or fetus. The police were alerted to the potential presence of human remains in the outdoor area of this northern community, located near The Pas, on Monday morning. These remains were situated between two residences, as disclosed in an official statement released by the RCMP on Wednesday afternoon. An autopsy was conducted the same day, and the RCMP’s investigation is ongoing.
A memorial has been established at the location where the human remains were found, complete with stuffed animals and a miniature jacket. Elder Edwin Jebb from Opaskwayak Cree Nation mentioned that a sacred fire has been ignited at the scene. He also highlighted a recent vigil held with an unexpected turnout of 80 individuals, emphasizing the impact of the situation on the community.
In response to the distressing event, community members are coping in various ways, with mutual support being a prominent and positive approach. The RCMP has requested anyone possessing information relevant to the investigation to contact The Pas RCMP at 204-627-6204.
