“Government Cracks Down on AI-Generated Non-Consensual Images”

Date:

Every day, women and girls are victims of a disturbing trend where their facial images are digitally manipulated onto explicit photos using Artificial Intelligence. These manipulated images are then circulated on various platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and porn websites without the victims’ consent, causing immense harm.

The impact of such actions on survivors is severe, yet those responsible for hosting and profiting from this appalling content have evaded accountability for too long. The government is taking a firm stance against this form of sexual abuse and violence towards women and girls, acknowledging the widespread nature of these incidents happening online.

Tech companies and offenders have long used complexity as an excuse to avoid taking action. However, the government has already implemented stringent online safety laws to combat this issue and reduce violence against women and girls significantly in the coming years.

In a groundbreaking move, the government has declared that senior executives at pornographic companies can face criminal charges if their platforms fail to remove non-consensual intimate images as required by Ofcom. This means that those in leadership positions can no longer turn a blind eye to such content and may face imprisonment if they neglect their responsibilities.

The government’s approach is bold and aims to address the real harm caused by these actions. It surpasses previous calls for action by Members of Parliament and emphasizes that individuals profiting from online abuse will be held accountable by law.

The recent Crime and Policing Bill introduces strict penalties for the creation and distribution of tools that generate unauthorized intimate images, as well as the production and solicitation of sexually explicit deepfake content involving adults. Additionally, new laws will criminalize the possession, creation, or distribution of AI tools designed for generating child sexual abuse material, with severe penalties for offenders.

The government is committed to cracking down on these offenses both online and offline, signaling a significant shift towards holding perpetrators accountable and providing justice for victims. This proactive approach ensures that those responsible for perpetrating such crimes will face legal consequences, marking a crucial step in combating violence against women and girls in British history.
