The contest for the prestigious title of Weather Photographer of the Year is in full swing, showcasing stunning images capturing the beauty and power of Mother Nature in action. The Royal Meteorological Society recently showcased a selection of last year’s winning photographs, featuring extraordinary scenes such as a circular rainbow, a Texas storm, and a cloud reminiscent of a UFO.

Now in its second decade, this global competition invites photographers worldwide to submit their most striking images that depict the impact and magnificence of weather. The competition, which kicks off today, celebrates exceptional photography that highlights both intense weather phenomena and the increasing effects of climate change. Notable winning images from the previous year include cloud formations resembling waves in the Czech Republic, fishermen braving the rain in Myanmar, and dramatic sea conditions along the UK’s southern coast in Newhaven.

Prof Liz Bentley FRMetS, the Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, emphasized the competition’s role in showcasing how weather influences our world, from moments of natural splendor to events of significant consequence. With climate change altering our environment, these images serve a vital purpose in helping individuals comprehend and engage with the science underlying weather and climate.

The competition is open to photographers of all skill levels, from amateurs to seasoned professionals, and entry is free. Winners will be revealed in November, offering a platform to recognize exceptional talent in the field of weather photography.
