Fashion accessories retailer Claire’s has shut down its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, according to administrators. Kroll, the administrators, confirmed that all remaining stores of the chain have stopped operations, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. However, concession outlets and European stores will continue to operate at this time.
Kroll stated that as of April 27th, all standalone Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland have ceased trading, with employees being notified about their redundancy. There is ongoing discussion with a potential buyer who is in talks with several landlords to secure new leases for some locations.
Last year, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital acquired 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland, emphasizing the possibility of preserving over 1,000 jobs that would have been at risk. However, in January this year, the UK segment went into administration due to challenging retail conditions, including government policies impacting businesses like Claire’s.
Concerns are also rising for TJ Jones, the rebranded WH Smith high street business, as reports suggest it is preparing for a significant restructuring that may lead to numerous store closures.
The closure of the 154 stores does not impact Claire’s 356 concessions, which include locations in Asda stores and its head office. Fashion expert Priya Raj noted a shift in consumer preferences away from the colorful and novelty jewelry that Claire’s is known for, towards more mainstream and minimalistic designs influenced by social media trends.
Recent reports indicate the closure of several Claire’s stores, such as Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
