A father and son duo, George, 57, and Josh Kohler, 23, hailing from Norfolk, are embarking on a world cycling expedition that spans over 400 days, encompassing more than 25 countries. Throughout their global tour, they have encountered a myriad of landscapes ranging from arid deserts to towering mountains and lush rice fields.
Commencing their journey from Norfolk on March 29th last year, the pair has traversed thousands of miles, with an anticipated total distance of nearly 30,000 kilometers by the journey’s end. Not only have they achieved remarkable physical feats, ascending a staggering 180,000 meters – equivalent to scaling 20 Mount Everests, but they have also raised over £30,000 for charity.
George and Josh are on the verge of clinching three Guinness World Records titles: ‘Fastest father and son circumnavigation on bicycles’, ‘Farthest distance cycled by a father and son’, and ‘Most countries cycled through by a father and son’. As they near the culmination of their extraordinary expedition, the duo shared insights with The Mirror following the completion of their South America leg.
China emerged as a standout destination for the pair during their global odyssey. The Kohlers spent two months cycling through the country, captivated by its diverse culture, delectable cuisine, picturesque scenery, and welcoming locals. George reminisced about remarkable experiences such as walking along the Great Wall and marveling at the vast Hani rice terraces.
Despite the awe-inspiring moments, the journey was not without its challenges. Brazil posed significant difficulties due to its rugged terrain, while South America in general lacked cycling infrastructure, leading to hazardous road conditions. Australia also presented daunting stretches of barren desert, testing their endurance and resilience.
With just a few weeks remaining in their epic voyage, George and Josh aim to break records and conclude their expedition in Norfolk on May 2nd. Reflecting on their transformative journey, the duo expressed mixed emotions as they prepare to bid farewell to their extraordinary adventure and adapt to life post-expedition. Their bond has strengthened through shared trials and triumphs, culminating in a memorable journey that also raised funds for charitable causes.
