Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018. Despite initially being captivated by the city’s beauty, her expectations didn’t align with the reality she encountered. Struggling to establish a network and lacking “Canadian experience” for job opportunities, she found herself in a challenging situation, working long hours for minimal pay in a cramped living space.
Feeling isolated and disillusioned, Moony’s perception of Vancouver soured over time. She criticized the limitations of public transportation, the slower pace of life, and the persistent rain that permeated the city. Missing the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations, she felt disconnected and adrift in Vancouver’s seemingly elusive social scene.
Ultimately, the loneliness and monotony became overwhelming, exacerbated by the onset of the pandemic. After waiting for two years, Moony decided to leave for London, seeking the bustling energy and vibrancy of a familiar setting. While she enjoyed her time in London, she realized that her time in Vancouver had quietly reshaped her, instilling a sense of tranquility and self-discovery.
Reflecting on her experiences, Moony acknowledges Vancouver’s flaws but also recognizes the personal growth and introspection it facilitated. Returning to the city with a newfound appreciation for its nuances, she hopes to reconcile with Vancouver, embracing its imperfections and seeking a harmonious relationship built on mutual understanding and acceptance.
