“Canada Launches $100M Steel Shipping Rebate Program”

Date:

The Canadian government is injecting $100 million into the steel industry through a new initiative that covers half of the transportation expenses for shipping or rail transport of domestically produced steel within the country. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon unveiled the Commodities Sectoral Support Program in Hamilton as a direct response to U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, and related products. These tariffs range from 10 to 50 percent.

MacKinnon emphasized the strategic importance of Canada’s steel industry, particularly in Hamilton, stating that the program aims to not only protect but also enhance the industry. The program, commencing today, will provide companies with a 50 percent rebate on the costs of transporting certified Canadian steel between provinces. It is set to operate for a year or until the $100 million budget is exhausted, with a maximum rebate of $50 million per producer.

Regarding the possibility of the program running out of funds prematurely, MacKinnon suggested that they would consider extensions based on the uptake. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, campaigning in Quebec, proposed extending the gas and diesel excise tax holiday and eliminating the industrial carbon tax to make steel transport more affordable.

The rebate initiative aligns with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to boost the Canadian economy by streamlining and reducing the cost of domestic product shipments. Industry leaders, such as Ron Bedard from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, lauded the program, foreseeing significant positive impacts on the industry nationwide. Jason Card of the Chamber of Marine Commerce also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the program’s role in strengthening supply chains and supporting the national economy through facilitating steel movement across different regions and purposes.
