Father-Daughter Duo Shines in International Whistling Contest

Date:

A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” casually mentioned participating in an international whistling contest, sparking the interest of Ben Shannon and his daughter Sumire. They signed up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a fun activity. Despite initially treating it lightly, they were surprised to learn that the contest was in-person in Los Angeles.

After making the cut, they received coaching from the competition’s organizer, Carole Anne Kaufman, who highlighted the need for serious practice. Ben, feeling the pressure, dedicated himself to training alongside his daughter for over a month. They eventually found themselves in Hollywood for the prestigious competition.

At the event, they met talented whistlers from around the globe, showcasing their skills in a variety of performances. Ben’s perspective shifted from a history of ironic detachment to genuine appreciation for the art form and the dedication of the contestants. Sumire won silver in the kid’s category, while Ben took home gold in the level one adults category.

The experience taught Ben the value of wholehearted commitment and the joy of embracing passion without fear of judgment. Despite his lingering ironic tendencies, he celebrated their success and recognized the importance of allowing oneself to care deeply about something.
