“Reviving a Family Tradition: Dining on the Floor Resurfaces Memories”

Date:

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around our family dinners. Seated cross-legged on a small beige mat, we basked in the warm, amber glow of the setting sun. Our meals often featured a delightful spread of Pakistani dishes, with biryani and butter chicken taking the spotlight. These gatherings, where we shared stories and daily highlights, were a tradition passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore to our suburban life in North Delta.

Over time, our hectic schedules pulled my siblings and me away from these intimate family dinners. Years flew by, and it had been more than a decade since we last sat on that humble mat. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner when I was 23, the nostalgia of our family tradition resurfaced. Inviting my friends to join us, I introduced them to the idea of dining on the floor as we used to. Surprisingly, we found the worn-out beige mat tucked away in storage, and without hesitation, we recreated the circle of togetherness with our Thanksgiving feast.

The evening turned into a heartwarming experience as my father, seated at the dining table, eventually joined us on the floor, explaining the significance of the tradition. Our friends embraced the simplicity of the moment, with some likening it to gathering around a campfire. This event symbolized a beautiful fusion of my cultural heritage and Canadian upbringing.

Inspired by this reunion, my family decided to revive the tradition. We continued to gather around the mat, sharing meals and stories, reinforcing the bonds that held us together amidst our busy lives. Whether on the mat or around the dining table, these moments of togetherness have become sacrosanct in our lives, transcending beyond Thanksgiving to enrich our family dynamics throughout the year. Just as it did for my father’s generation, this tradition serves as a timeless thread connecting us through generations to come.
