Growing up in the Philippines, I had never witnessed a full hockey game until the 2010 Winter Olympics. The electrifying final match between Canada and the U.S., where Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal secured victory, left a lasting impression on me. Surrounded by friends on Vancouver Island, we watched the game on a large screen and witnessed the nationwide celebration that ensued, with car horns blaring and people singing the national anthem everywhere.
Having recently moved to Canada, I was amazed at how a hockey triumph could unite an entire nation. This experience sparked my curiosity about the sport, and gradually, hockey began to weave its way into my daily life as a new immigrant. Attending my first live hockey game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks, was a transformative experience. The energy of the crowd, the sea of orange jerseys, and the overwhelming sense of community left an indelible mark on me.
As I settled into life in Canada, I realized the immense significance of hockey in the country’s cultural fabric. The sport transcends mere entertainment; it is deeply ingrained in the national identity, almost akin to a religion. Embracing this newfound passion, I immersed myself in hockey culture, learning about legendary players like Wayne Gretzky and eagerly following key matchups like the “Battle of Alberta.”
Fast forward to my move to Vancouver in 2016, where I met Mike, a fellow hockey enthusiast. Our shared love for the sport reignited my passion for hockey, and Saturday night hockey games with nachos became a cherished tradition in our relationship. Through Mike, I delved deeper into the intricacies of the game, from understanding terms like cherry-picking to grasping the intensity of on-ice altercations.
Despite our differences in background and interests, Mike and I have found a harmonious balance, embracing each other’s passions. While I introduced him to the world of tennis, he shared his profound love for hockey with me. Our joint attendance at hockey games, clad in Canucks and Oilers jerseys, symbolizes the union of our diverse interests under the banner of love.
From the initial allure of hockey during the 2010 Olympics to the present day, my journey with the sport has evolved into a profound love story with Canada. Hockey has become more than a game to me; it is a conduit for patriotism, community bonding, cultural integration, and meaningful connections—a sentiment that resonates deeply with my Canadian experience.
