Conservative and Bloc MPs are urging an urgent convening of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate espionage accusations against a former Canadian intern apprehended by Belgian authorities on suspicion of espionage.
Expressing deep concern, Conservative MP Frank Caputo emphasized the need for a thorough examination of Canada’s national security screening procedures. The parliament is urged to assess potential gaps in the security screening system that could have jeopardized sensitive information or the security of Canada and its allies.
The individual in question, Biwei Zhang, had served as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. Although Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation identified her as Zhang, a systems engineer with an economics background.
Zhang’s online profile indicates prior employment with the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada. European security sources, including Reuters, have reported that the intern allegedly displayed suspicious behavior that attracted the attention of NATO’s internal security services. Reports suggest Zhang exhibited excessive curiosity about colleagues, accessed unauthorized areas, and viewed files beyond her professional scope in SHAPE’s IT Department.
Zhang is currently in custody in Belgium, but the allegations against her have not been proven in court.
In response to the situation, Caputo announced that the committee will scrutinize how Zhang secured the internship at NATO, the extent of security screening prior to her appointment, any red flags raised by Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring measures.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged to investigate Canada’s security screening processes to address concerns raised by the case. Anandasangaree emphasized the need to uncover any potential ties Zhang may have had with Canadian agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Prime Minister Mark Carney previously indicated that Canadian security officials were not caught off guard by the arrest, suggesting a proactive stance in handling the situation.
