Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed the acquisition of Promise David for the upcoming Premier League season. The Canadian striker has been signed on a season-long loan from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. The deal includes an obligation to purchase David for a reported fee of $29.7 million US, subject to certain undisclosed conditions.
Union Saint-Gilloise announced that David will be playing in the Premier League starting from the next season, setting a new record fee for the Belgian club. David, who has scored 41 goals in 82 matches during his two seasons at Union, was instrumental in the club’s first league title victory in 90 years in 2025. He extended his contract with Union through June 2029 last year.
Having represented Canada in the recent World Cup, Promise David scored one goal while recovering from a hip injury. He has netted four goals in 14 appearances for the Canadian national team. Born in Brampton, Ontario, to Nigerian parents, David initially played for Nigeria’s under-23 team before switching allegiance to Canada in 2025 following FIFA approval after discussions with Canada coach Jesse Marsch.
Brighton marks the latest chapter in David’s diverse career, having previously played in Croatia, Malta, and Estonia before joining Belgium in July 2024. Brighton’s Sporting Director, Mike Cave, expressed excitement about David’s attributes, goal-scoring record, and international experience, believing his prime years are ahead, hoping for a significant impact in the upcoming season.
Brighton, a consistent presence in the Premier League for nine seasons, finished in eighth place in the previous season, maintaining their status in England’s top-flight league.
