Hours following Ed Sheeran’s response to the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his tour due to pro-Palestinian remarks, all remaining supporting acts have decided to withdraw from Sheeran’s tour.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sheeran expressed dismay over the Israel-Palestine conflict, describing it as a human tragedy affecting both sides but opted not to take a public stance. While attributing Macklemore’s ousting to venues and promoters, Sheeran faced a backlash as Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Finneas announced their departure from the tour in solidarity with Palestinians, leaving the tour without opening acts.
Venues scheduled for upcoming shows informed Sheeran that they would cancel his performances if Macklemore, 43, was not removed from the lineup due to the controversial nature of his performance messages. Videos of Macklemore chanting “Free Palestine” and expressing support for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank drew criticism from pro-Israel groups.
Sheeran clarified that Macklemore’s removal was a decision made by the promoter, not him, and despite attempts to mediate, the venues remained firm in their stance. The supporting acts, including Rowe and Beoga, cited their commitment to justice and activism as reasons for exiting the tour.
Danish artist Lukas Graham highlighted the importance of discussing war and civilian casualties, emphasizing the need for open dialogue. Finneas, brother and collaborator of Billie Eilish, echoed the sentiment of not silencing artists advocating for the oppressed.
The controversy has shed light on the challenges faced by artists speaking out about Gaza, with repercussions such as being dropped from projects for taking pro-Palestinian positions. The future of Sheeran’s tour remains uncertain as it progresses without openers or seeks replacements for the remaining U.S. dates, culminating at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
The situation has sparked discussions about the responsibility of artists in addressing global conflicts and the scrutiny they face for their public stances. Sheeran’s decision to remain apolitical has faced criticism, with contrasting views on the role of artists in advocating for social justice issues.
