A Calgary police officer accused of two counts of murder is set to face trial after an eight-day preliminary inquiry. Const. Craig Stothard, aged 52, is charged with second-degree murder in the killings of Wesley Davidson and Levon Boyce Fox, who were shot in May 2023. The incident occurred after a lengthy pursuit of the victims, who were in a stolen cube van along Memorial Drive. Another individual in the van, Fox’s brother, sustained injuries during the event.
Following the recent ruling by Justice Mark Mastel, sufficient evidence has been established to proceed with the trial. A publication ban was implemented at the beginning of the hearing to ensure a fair trial process for Stothard. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team formally charged Stothard last summer after a thorough two-year investigation.
Stothard, who is currently on bail, is on leave with pay from the Calgary Police Service. The case will transition from Alberta’s Court of Justice to the Court of King’s Bench. Trial dates will be arranged by Prosecutor Jeff Rudiak and defense attorney Don MacLeod in the upcoming weeks.
