U.S. President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a decision that has caused discontent among some Americans, including members of the House of Representatives. Democratic representatives from New York and Michigan introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act to reverse the name change and prevent future renaming of any Great Lake.
The controversy escalated when Google renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its Google Maps app for American users, prompting discussions with Apple to do the same on Apple Maps. However, MapQuest announced it would not alter the name.
Representative Tim Kennedy, who represents a district bordering Canada, expressed opposition to the name change, citing it as a distraction from more critical issues such as economic policies and tariffs affecting relations with Canada. He emphasized the need to rescind the executive order swiftly.
Kennedy highlighted President Trump’s behavior as concerning, attributing it to a broader pattern of harmful actions, including imposing tariffs and engaging in international conflicts. He called for accountability and emphasized the upcoming election as an opportunity for Americans to voice their concerns.
Regarding the strong historical ties between the U.S. and Canada, Kennedy emphasized the deep cultural and economic connections, including trade partnerships and shared border regions. He stressed the importance of standing together with Canadian allies and friends amidst ongoing challenges.
The representative expressed confidence in gaining bipartisan support for the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act, citing past instances where bipartisan efforts succeeded in challenging the administration’s policies. He urged for a shift in government accountability and restoration of order through the upcoming midterm elections.
