“Fans Flock to P.E.I. for ‘Road to Avonlea’ Convention”

Date:

A childhood fascination with a Canadian TV show set on Prince Edward Island led Patty Czajka to attend a fan convention centered around the series “Road to Avonlea.” Czajka, who watched the show with her grandmother every Sunday, particularly admired actress Mag Ruffman, known for her role as Aunt Olivia in the 1990s production. Determined to meet Ruffman at the event on P.E.I., Czajka eagerly purchased a ticket.

Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out convention celebrating the award-winning Canadian series that aired in over 100 countries. Running from 1990 to 1996, “Road to Avonlea” spanned seven seasons and followed the story of Sarah Stanley, played by Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show captivated audiences with its timeless themes.

The three-day convention offered oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and tours to filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables.” Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, highlighted the enduring appeal of the series, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and fellowship resonating with viewers seeking an escape.

Mag Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, expressed gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support and emotional connection to the show. She acknowledged the lasting impact of portraying her character, Aunt Olivia, and shared that thoughts of Olivia still cross her mind occasionally. Meanwhile, Czajka shared her joy in introducing the series to her children, finding rare value in a show that can be watched together as a family.

The convention marked a special gathering for fans and cast members alike, showcasing the enduring legacy of “Road to Avonlea” and the timeless themes that continue to captivate audiences across generations.
