Hansard, an eight-year-old horse trained by Gary and Josh Moore, tragically passed away during the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Despite being a long-shot contender, Hansard had to be pulled up due to sustaining a severe injury during the race.

The Jockey Club released a statement confirming the unfortunate incident, stating that Hansard suffered a fatal injury while competing in the race. Veterinary professionals immediately attended to the horse, but it was deemed necessary to euthanize him for his welfare.

In the same event, the Arkle Chase at 2 pm was won by Kargese, trained by Willie Mullins. Jockey Danny Mullins, who rode Kargese to victory, expressed his joy at the win and praised the horse’s performance in the final stretch. He also commended trainer Willie Mullins for his expertise and teamwork.

The horse racing industry, like all sports, carries inherent risks, but The Jockey Club, responsible for organizing prestigious events like the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, diligently works to mitigate risks for all participants. Significant investments in equine welfare, amounting to over £63 million since 2000, have been made towards veterinary care, education, and research.

Under the guidance of the independently-chaired Horse Welfare Board, the strategic plan ‘A Life Well Lived’ has shown positive outcomes, with a decreasing rate of fallers in races over the past two decades. Safety measures such as changing jump markers to aid equine vision, using padded hurdles to reduce fall rates, and implementing thorough review processes after any racecourse fatality have been introduced to enhance safety standards.

Collaboration with welfare organizations like World Horse Welfare, RSPCA, and Blue Cross ensures ongoing adherence to the highest welfare standards within the racing industry. Public awareness initiatives, like National Racehorse Week offering free visits to various equine facilities, aim to educate and positively influence perceptions of horse welfare.

With a massive attendance of five million in 2025, horse racing remains the second most popular sport in the UK after football, showcasing its enduring appeal among sports enthusiasts.
