Jos Verstappen emerged unscathed from a dramatic car crash during the Rally of Wallonia on Sunday. Despite his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 sustaining significant damage after colliding with a tree, Verstappen, father of F1 champion Max Verstappen, and co-driver Jesper Vermeulen avoided serious injuries.
Verstappen’s vehicle was already impaired from an earlier incident in the competition’s fourth stage. Despite the setbacks, he managed a remarkable comeback, securing third place behind Adrian Fernemont and Maxime Potty on Saturday.
Unfortunately, Verstappen and Vermeulen had to retire from the rally following the crash. The Rally of Wallonia, known for its technical complexities on tarmac roads with high speeds and challenging twists, offered a demanding course for participants.
This year, Verstappen competed without his usual co-driver Renaud Jamoul, who was recovering from ankle surgery. Meanwhile, speculation looms over Max Verstappen’s future in F1 amid the suspension of the race calendar due to conflicts in the Middle East.
The cancellation of events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia has provided Max with time to reflect on his performance under the FIA’s new regulations, which he has criticized for diminishing the excitement in racing. Following a disappointing finish in Japan, Max expressed contemplation about the value of continuing in the sport versus spending more time with family and friends.
