The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a mother accused of strangling her three young children, reached its conclusion on Wednesday, shedding light on the issue of postpartum mental health.
Closing arguments are scheduled to commence on Thursday, followed by jury deliberations.
Clancy, aged 36, has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, citing postpartum psychosis as the reason for the deaths of five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan Clancy in their Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.
Postpartum psychosis, a rare mental disorder, is associated with the challenges of childbirth such as stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal fluctuations.
Expert Testimony from FBI Forensic Psychiatrist
Prosecutors allege that Clancy meticulously planned the killings and was fully aware of the consequences of her actions.
Throughout the fifth week of the trial, Clancy chose not to testify, while the defense presented ten witnesses, including acquaintances and family members. The prosecution, in contrast, summoned over 70 witnesses, including her former spouse.
In the prosecution’s final rebuttal, a forensic psychiatrist affiliated with the University of Virginia and the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit refuted Clancy’s claim that she was instructed by a voice to commit the murders.
Under questioning by Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague, Dr. Gregory Saathoff dismissed Clancy’s assertions that the voice directed her on the specifics of the killings. Saathoff highlighted Clancy’s independent decision-making and swift execution of the tragic events.

The tragic events unfolded when all three children were strangled in the family’s basement using exercise bands. Clancy then attempted to take her own life while her husband was out for takeout and at a pharmacy on January 24, 2023. Saathoff emphasized Clancy’s autonomy in orchestrating the sequence of events with precision and speed.
Saathoff raised doubts about Clancy’s claims that the voice vanished after the murders, noting inconsistencies in her accounts and her lack of prior disclosure regarding hearing voices.
“The cessation of the voice following the act is atypical,” Saathoff remarked. “This behavior is unprecedented in my experience.”
