Britons traveling to popular European destinations like France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece will encounter new entry regulations due to the launch of Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES). This system mandates that non-EU visitors, including Brits, must provide biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints upon entering the EU.
In addition to biometric data, personal information from passports will be gathered at EU borders. The EES will track entry and exit dates to identify overstays easily and is expected to replace traditional passport stamps eventually.
Despite the benefits of the new technology, some airports have experienced challenges in implementing the system, leading to longer queues for British travelers compared to EU passport holders who have dedicated lanes for expedited processing.
To streamline the process for Britons and other non-EU nationals, an official app called the Travel to Europe app is available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. This app aims to facilitate border checks by allowing users to pre-register their details, including passport information and travel itinerary.
Families traveling together can conveniently add co-travelers to the app, consolidating all necessary information in one place. By scanning their passports, taking a selfie, and answering a few questions on the app, travelers can generate QR codes for each passenger. These QR codes can be scanned at self-service kiosks or by border control staff, potentially expediting the entry process.
Warnings have been issued about potential disruptions and confusion at popular tourist destinations like Tenerife as the EES implementation unfolds. Reports of extended queues and operational challenges have emerged, with the upcoming May half-term expected to further strain the system.
